2nd Fisheries Management and Marine Environment Workshop

Events
Date: 18 September 2018

Venue: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The South China Sea is an ecosystem of global importance on which millions of people rely for their livelihoods. The effective management of the South China Sea (SCS) requires international cooperation, particularly among China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

At the inaugural Fisheries Management and Marine Environment Workshop, held in Beijing, China on 7 June 2018, participants identified the following priorities for cooperation:

  • Cooperative approaches to reducing ocean plastics and marine debris. Marine debris threatens many of the SCS ecosystems and industries. With the debris emanating from both the littoral countries and beyond the region, there is an opportunity to take the first steps towards a coordinated response such as joint research, coordinated collection, standardised collection methods, or comparing regulatory frameworks.
  • Opportunities for Data Sharing. Any cooperative approach to protect the marine environment and strengthen fisheries management should be based on an agreed foundation of evidence. Much of this evidence base can be built through enhanced sharing of existing data from government and non-government sources.
  • Multilateral frameworks for improved environment protection and fisheries management. In addition to addressing specific issues, there is an opportunity to begin developing a broader consensus on the cooperative measures needed to protect the SCS marine environment.

In order to develop the potential for cooperation on these areas further, the 2nd Fisheries Management and Marine Environment Workshop will be hosted in Kuala Lumpur on 18 September 2018, and will bring together scientists, academics, and government officials participating in their personal capacities to devise cooperative strategies to protect the region’s ecosystems and promote the sustainable management of its resources.
